Happy Birthday, baby brother!!

I love my little brother a lot.  That didn't used to be the case.  When we were growing up, he was the bane of my existence.  Six years younger and a pain in the rear.  Two favorite stories illustrate my point.  Story number one:  one evening I had been tasked with babysitting the two younger siblings.  I was probably twelve, Evan would have been six.  At one point in the evening he got annoyed with me (don't remember exactly why), and ran around the house chasing me with a butter knife in his hand, threatening to stab me.  Story number two:  I was probably a sophomore in high school and was talking to a boy on the phone.  Our dad caught Evan taping my phone conversation.  Yep, he was a real gem to live with.  But once I left for college, that all seemed to change.  And now we can't go a couple of weeks without saying "We need to hang out!"  It helps that I adore his wife, too!

I made a "non-traditional" birthday card for him this year.  He retired after 20 years in the military, where he earned a bachelor's degree, and just recently finished his master's and is teaching at a local technical college.  But his dream is to leave everything and sail around the world.  With the recent purchase of a sailboat (their "starter boat"!), that dream is getting closer to reality.  They have two boys who need to finish school first, but they are working toward their dream.  So I thought I'd make a card that expressed some of that.

The sentiment is, of course, a Tim Holtz stamp.  The papers are My Mind's Eye Stella and Rose. I used my Cameo to sketch the compass rose.

And now we get to go celebrate with a sail on the boat!!  Let the fun commence!
